And then there are sessions like Cole's — where every single location, every outfit, every detail was chosen because of him. Because of who he actually is. And that's the kind of session that makes this work feel like the exact right thing to be doing.

Hawaiian Shirt Thursdays Are Real, and They Are Wonderful

Cole is a Class of 2026 senior at Normal Community High School, and if you know Cole, you already know about Hawaiian Shirt Thursdays.

He created it. Every Thursday, without fail, Cole walks into school in a Hawaiian shirt. It's become part of his identity — the kind of thing that other people look forward to, the kind of quirk that makes a person genuinely memorable. So when we started talking about his senior session, it was never a question of if the Hawaiian shirts would make an appearance. It was only a question of where.

McGraw Park in Bloomington was the answer. Cole wanted to incorporate the water feature, and the moment he said it out loud, it made complete sense. Hawaiian shirt. Water. Warm summer light. There's a playfulness to those images that you just can't manufacture — it has to come from the person in front of the lens, and Cole brought it naturally.

The Fedora Look: Letting the Serious Side Show Up Too

Here's something I love about working with seniors who have big personalities: there's almost always more than one layer.

Cole has the fun, the humor, the Hawaiian shirts. But he also has a quiet confidence that deserved its own moment. So we built a second look around his love of fedora hats — and the goal was simple. Let that more serious, composed side of him come through.

Those images have a completely different energy than the McGraw Park shots. Intentionally. Because Cole is both of those things, and his senior gallery should reflect all of it — not just the most obvious version of him.

That's what senior photos are actually for. Not just a record that you existed in a cap and gown. A real look at who you were at this exact moment in your life.

Normal Community Football Field: Where It All Came Together

Cole plays football for Normal Community, and there was never a version of this session that didn't end on that field.

We finished the day at NCHS — jersey on, football hat in hand, and then into the locker room for something a little more dramatic. Smoke. Lights. The kind of images that feel earned, because they're built around something Cole actually cares about.

These aren't prop photos. This is Cole's sport, his team, his space. When the details are real, the images feel real — and that comes through every single time.

What This Session Is Really About (And Why It Matters for Yours)

I want to be honest about something, because I think it matters if you're a parent or a senior trying to decide where to invest for this milestone.

A senior session doesn't have to be quick. It doesn't have to be generic. It doesn't have to look like every other set of senior photos showing up in your feed right now.

Cole's session worked because he showed up as himself. Hawaiian shirts and all. And my job was to build a session around that — to find the locations that made sense, to plan the looks that showed more than one side of him, and to make sure the final gallery felt like Cole, not like a template.
